THE VINEYARD
Situated in Australia's best known and prestigious wine growing region, the Barossa Valley in South Australia, about 60km North of Adelaide. The 1847 Vineyards are located in Rowland Flat, a small township between Tanunda and Lyndoch, named after the Surveyor Henry Rowland who charted most of the Barossa in the mid 1800's. Within ten years of the first immigrant settlers venturing into the Barossa the grant was given for the 1847 property.
The wines of 1847 are produced from grapes grown in vineyards located in and adjacent to the Rowland Flat Township. The soils of the area are mainly “Terra Rossa”, with red brown sandy loams overlying a limestone base. At 190m above sea level and about 40km from the coast, the climate in the Barossa is continental, with warm to hot days but cool evenings. The cool evenings ensure that the grapes have a long ripening period resulting in good flavour concentration and natural acidity. The average rainfall of about 500-550mm is sufficient for healthy grapevine growth.
